The Eggs – A Greek Folk Tale

retold and illustrated by Aliki
(ages 5-11) When a humble sea captain has to leave an inn in an unexpected rush without paying for his meal of four fried eggs, it takes him six years before he's able to return to pay his debt. The sly inn keeper requests five hundred gold pieces for the eggs and justifies his price. The poor sea captain is distraught as he fears losing his boat, home and all he owns to pay such a price. They are to meet at court the following morning. A stranger, that also happens to be a lawyer, promises to help the captain. How will he ever be able to help the captain keep his boat?
